St Mary Magdalene

St. Mary Magdalene —
The Apostle of the Empty Tomb

Feast Day: July 22

Life Summary

St. Mary of Magdalene was one of the first women to follow Jesus. Scripture tells us that He cast seven demons out of her — a sign of complete restoration and renewal. From that moment, she remained near Him: traveling with the disciples, standing at the foot of the Cross, and being among the first at the tomb on Easter morning.

While others fled in fear, Mary stayed. She watched where they laid His body. When the world was still dark, she came to the tomb carrying love and devotion. There, she met the risen Christ — though at first she did not recognize Him. It was when He spoke her name that everything changed.

Mary Magdalene became the first witness of the Resurrection and the first messenger of the Good News. Jesus entrusted her with the words, “Go to my brothers and tell them.” In her faithfulness, the Church recognizes her as Apostle to the Apostles — the one who saw and believed, then went forth to proclaim life conquering death.

Reflection Message

St. Mary Magdalene’s story is one of steadfast love. She teaches us what it means to stay — even when hope seems lost. In her grief, she did not turn away; she kept searching for the One she loved. And because she remained, she was the first to hear her name spoken by the risen Christ.

Her story speaks to every heart that has faced loss, despair, or silence. Healing does not mean forgetting what was broken — it means meeting Christ within it. Mary’s encounter at the empty tomb reminds us that faith often begins in the dark, and resurrection light breaks through when we stay near Him.

Takeaway

“Faith begins in the dark, but love stays until the light comes.”

Prayer to St. Mary Magdalene

St. Mary Magdalene,
you who sought the Lord with tears
and found Him risen in the morning light,
teach us to remain faithful in times of darkness.

When we cannot see the way,
help us to wait with love and trust.
May your witness strengthen our hope
that Christ is always near, even in sorrow.

Pray for us, that we too may hear Him call our name
and rise to share His love with the world.

Amen.
